One of the computer keyboard manufacturers based out of Chennai was making keyboards by using a specially compounded grade of ABS. This material was made using specialty ingredients to ensure that the product can be laser marked with high definition. However, after injection molding the keys of the keyboard, when the keys were being assembled onto the mainframe of the keyboard, he noticed that the keys would crack. Although this compound was made entirely from prime material, it was still not able to meet the impact requirements of the application.
It is typically difficult to increase the impact strength of ABS as ABS itself is added to materials for increasing the impact strength of the compounds. However, after understanding the problem fundamentally, I developed a customized solution which would comparatively relax the stresses in the molded article and hopefully resolve the issue.
The Reborn ABS Masterbatch was supplied in a ready to use granules form which was to be added directly at the molding machine. 10% of the MB was physically mixed with 90% of the original compound and injection molded. The molded keys showed no difference in performance or finish. Ultimately, we passed the real test, which was that upon assembly the keys did not crack.
