Stepping outside your home to feel the sun's warmth on your skin may sound like a good option unless we know the harmful effects the same sunlight brings for us and the materials around us. The sun is the primary source of UV radiation, which is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum between X-rays and Visible light. These radiations are harmful to humans and can also damage plastic products by changing their composition, leading to cracking, chalking, and colour changes, and also lead to the loss of physical properties. Exposure to sunlight and certain artificial lights significantly reduces the durability of plastic products, as UV radiation breaks down the chemical bonds in a polymer with a process known as photodegradation. To withstand these damaging effects of UV light, and extend the lifespan of plastic products, UV Masterbatch is added to the polymers during the manufacturing process. A1 Impex, your trusted supplier and manufacturer, stands at the forefront of this industry, providing high-quality UV additive masterbatches that ensure that your products maintain their integrity and durability, even under relentless sunlight.

Specially Formulated Blends of UV Stabilizers

These UV Masterbatch are specially formulated blends of UV stabilizers and base polymers, creating a synergistic effect, which provides comprehensive protection against UV radiation and oxidative degradation of polymer and plastic products.

The Science behind UV Masterbatches

To understand our products better and to appreciate their value, knowing the science behind them really matters. Upon absorption of the UV radiation, free radicals are created in the plastic product which forms oxygen hydroperoxides in the presence of oxygen. This breaks the double bonds in the backbone chain, leading to a brittle structure. This process is known as photo-oxidation.

The two processes involved here are:

  • Photolysis: Involves the absorption of UV radiation and the formation of free radicals due to the breaking of the molecular bonds in the polymer.
  • Autoxidation: Involves the reaction of the free radical formed during photolysis with oxygen to form a peroxy radical. This new radical then attacks the polymer backbone, generating another free radical. As a result of this process, more and more number of free radicals are formed, which leads to the formation of an increasing number of oxidized polymer molecules.

Since we need to inhibit this photo-initiation process, UV stabilizers are developed and added to the polymer.
