Polyethylene (PE) is the most used plastic in the world. It is produced by the polymerization of the ethylene monomer. Polyethylenes are classified into High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Low density polyethylene (LDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE). LDPE is characterized by high amount of long chain branching, which makes the structure less compact and hence low in density. This makes the material soft, flexible and lightweight. LDPE is used extensively in the packaging industry for making foils, trays, packaging films, plastic bags etc.
